Aging adults are more prone to depression due to social isolation, deteriorating mental and physical capabilities and the contribution of various other factors. They are also more vulnerable than other age groups towards the health complications that arise from depression. Unfortunately, older people are resistant towards treatment, making the other family members increasingly anxious about their health. With a proper approach and some care, it is possible to help the elderly if they are suffering from depression.

Seeing eye to eye

It is natural to be concerned about elderly parents, and their present mood may be a threat to their life, but getting angry with them is almost always a bad idea. Most aged people resist treatment because they do not want to burden their children, or they do not want to feel weak, so it is crucial that your behavior should not insinuate these things. It is best to take it slow at first. Start by engaging them in a calm conversation about the recent happenings in their life. Gather information about their worries and anxieties. Simply listening to them has a very therapeutic effect.

Remember that depression is an illness and it cannot be cured simply by willing it away. Asking them to go outside more or not to think too much will just make them feel guilty about what they are going through. It is important to treat them as an equal, with care and respect, so that they are more open to your suggestions.

 Ease towards treatment

In your conversations with your elderly parents, try to gently guide them towards accepting treatment for depression. Make them understand that you are not being judgmental about what they are going through and support them through the process of treatment. Speak to a healthcare professional to find out how to balance their self-dependence and your concern so that it is beneficial for everyone involved.
